So, here's the thing. My buds and I have been paddling for 3 years now. All of us have ran the Upper and Middle Ocoee (this is our main stomping ground), Cheoah, Tellico, Big South Fork, the Upper and Lower Gauley, and a few others, multiple times. I haven't been able to go yet but a few members of our crew have also paddled Tallulah. We're all pretty solid at driving our creekboats and have spent the last few weekends at the Ocoee eddy hopping, ferrying, running new lines and such through the meat of all of the rapids.
We know some guys from NC who paddle the Narrows frequently and have agreed to show us the lines. We know that it's a big step up but how does one really know if they are ready? I've seen countless videos of the river and it looks rather straight forward. It seems more like keeping a level head and controlling the intimidation factor accounts for more than the technical ability. Am I wrong here? Isn't that how most rivers are? To date, this has been my exact experience. How does one benchmark what they are and are not ready for?
Besides, (and I know I'm going to catch Hell for this) there was a guy in the 2006(?) Green Race DVD who was running the Narrows for the first time and did just fine. He even sounded like he had less experience than we do.
What's everyone think?
