You can open a document (*.doc) in wordpad (forcefully), you probably won't get anything useful out of it though :).

I find it interesting that Microsoft Office cannot open Microsoft Works (A cheaper MS Word) files but Microsoft Works can read Microsoft Office (MS Word) documents.  

Macs are the same, if you don't have a software that understands the file format, the data is pretty much useless.  Generally Macs have software that seem to have more knowledge of file formats though.  That's because they HAVE to or nobody would use them.  MS has the luxury of saying if it's not MS...we don't care about it :)
