High housing costs are not an excuse. Housing costs in NYC are literally astronomic even in today's market, but you don't see Congressional hearings on the topic. Same is true in downtown San Francisco.
Not to sound cold hearted, but if people can't afford to live in "City X", then maybe, just possibly, perhaps... they can't afford to live there! Housing of your choice, in the location of your preference, is not a right nor an entitlement. I certainly cannot afford to live in NYC or SF, but I'm not taking out irrational mortgages in an attempt to rewrite the laws of personal finance. Neither am I expecting the taxpayer to act as my personal insurance policy against stupid decisions. I simply live where I can afford to live. What a novel concept, eh?
