This goes to the bigger issue of the balance of rights of the children vs an ownership of the children by the parents. In old English as well as most other law, not too long ago, children were considered the property of the parents. A parent could do whatever they wanted to with them (I think the Germans ate their children during one of their famines). We are always balancing a fine line about this. The abortion issue is right in the thick of this. Where exactly do parents have the right to terminate the life of the child? Exactly what proceedures should require the parent's permission? The child's? On the other far end of the spectrum, should parents be allowed to do things to a child like ear rings when the child is too young to make a decision? How young is too young to do various things? Should we execute 12 YO's? How old before they drink? Should we allow young children to drink wine when they are home with their parents? How about communion at church? How about circumcision? At exactly what age are children ready for what sexual act? This varies widely from culture to culture and location to location. I think no one should have children until they are at least 30. They barely take care of themselves until then. Should you have to have some sort of permit? How many children should you have? In China, it is two. |

Sometimes it helps to quit talking about rights, and instead talk about responsibilities. ezwater New
