   And people may have changed their ways in 20 years.  The folks in Eldorado were certainly using Food Stamps and Medicaid at a very high rate compared to the population at large, but they may have been avoiding cash support because it's a lot harder to get now and it involves random and much more frequent home visits than in the time period Krakauer was writing about.  Medicaid, S-Chip(federallly supported medical insurance for children whose income level is below a certain point, targets the working poor) and Food Stamps are much less supervised than TAN-F.  It's an easy way to get some support without attracting too much scrutiny.
   Both could be true.
