And they are changed to try to make them better.  Most cases opened by Child Protective Services leave the children with the parents, and even when children are removed, parents who are working to get their children back can easily have two years to get their kids back, and sometimes, under special circumstances, more.
It may be hard to wrap your head around the concept of organized, premeditated evil, but it exists.  Then there are just cultures that get wacky and come to believe that hurting others who are not members is a good thing.  Thank God both rare, but I'd say this has a shot at turning out to be an example of one or the other, or maybe both.
I've had no personal contact with the FLDS, so I don't know much, and the little contact I've had with mainstream members of mailine LDS has been in the context of vacations, so I have no real agenda there.  Most Mormons I've met seem to be nice people, and a pleasure to do business with.
FLDS, I suspect, not so much.
