efficiency was the moral equilavent of war. Reagan told them they could have anything they wanted--there was no need to conserve or sacrifice for the long term health of the nation's economy and they voted for Reagan in overwhelming numbers. Interestingly, former CIA Director R. James Woolsey (who while nominally a Democrat is not a liberal and is in fact an advisor to John McCain) is leading a campaign to work towards energy sufficiency thru conservation in the interests of national security. I'm in total agreement with Mr Woolsey: our dependency on foreign oil makes us very vulnerable and the outflow of US dollars to buy oil is going to bankrupt us. Despite the fact that it sometimes seems like nothing is manufactured in the US if it were not for our enormous oil purchases the US would have a net trade balance. Over the period of the GWB administration the value of the dollar has steadily decline making ever barrell of oil even that much more expensive and making the balance of trade even worse. |
