The 1962 Chevy Corvair was, 'cept for the Nash Rambler, the first compact, relatively fuel-efficient American car.
The 1962 Chevy Corvair had a design defect that allowed the fuel tank to explode in a collision in very specific circumstances.
Several hundred Corvairs did explode, and several dozen people were killed.
Ralph Nader wrote a book named "Unsafe At Any Speed", criticizing Chevy and warning people not to buy Corvairs.
Chevy identified and fixed the problem by the 1964 model-year.
THEN, after the problem had been corrected, Nader published his book. Well, he'd invested all this time and research writing it; what did he care if what he had to say was no longer true?
It killed sales of the Corvair, and Chevy discontinued it. Sorry folks, no more fuel-efficient American cars for sale.
Perhaps as a direct result, in 1969 I was able to buy a '65 Corvair convertable with bucket seats and 4 on the floor, in great cosmetic and running condition, for $500.00. My first car. Weee-hoooo, did I love that car!
