but I have worked in the area some.  Likely he tried to control his daughter, much as he perceived his mother to be controlling him, and let himself go overboard out of a need to protect the young woman from herself, because she was making him look bad.  The ability to continue doing what he knew to be wrong probably arose out of a need to be perceived as acting correctly in front of his friends and neighbors (and wife) and the whole thing got out of hand when he woke up one day and realised he had crossed several lines that were unforgiveable.  About that time it was going to take something serious to get his daughter out of the bunker, and, tragically, he was smart enough to keep that up for 25 years.  There's a good chance that he saw his sexual relationship with his daughter as somehow being to her benefit, perhaps as something of a replacement for what might have been her real life.  She probably acquiesced partly out of a fear that he might just lock the door and never come back.  My guess is he intimidated her more with the possibility of violence than with real violence.

In short:  smart, anxious, concerned about what others thought of him, violent, lacking in empathy.  Most likely narcissistic and antisocial - damn near a definition for a prison inmate, or a Faulkner character.

I'm off to go work out and hear some music.
