In schizophrenia, there is often breakdown or distortion of the personality.  There are also cognitive effects related to malfunction of the forebrain and related structures.

It might help if high schools included some accurate teaching about the major mental disorders and how they are treated.  Of course, students might even more strongly suspect that their parents are crazy.

Final word:  schizophrenia does NOT mean "split personality."
