She said that after that surgery, his personality completely changed and he was bitter and hateful most of the time, and that their doc told them it might happen.

My own dad also had a massive CI in 2003; no surgery (although that was an option) but he ended up with 6 stints in his heart. As far as I can tell, there was no change in his personality.
