what you describe above and often there is a cost in terms of stability. With smaller, more idealogical parties it is hard to get a majority so you see parties combine to form ruling groups. Then some issue arises that breaks the majority and the government falls apart.
With our two "big tents" we ger less purity and more stability. Besides, Americans have one controlling philosophy. That is utilatarianism. We like whatever works and don't care if it comes from Karl Marx or Genghis Khan. Our system fits our philosophy. |
