question Tripod/monopod for DSLR New

Just got a digital Rebel and am looking for suggestions from those of you who might have a digital SLR.  I need a tripod (or would a monopod be better) for outdoor photos.  I probably will be hiking  with it and taking pictures on roadside runs (but not taking it on the water at all).  There is really not any store that I can think of that has a decent selection of tripods and so I can't really comparison shop.  It's hard to figure out if one from an online site would be good or not.  A friend suggested a monopod which she said is easier to deal with when hiking.  I am going to try some other sites that deal with photography but figured there are some good resources here as well.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  And any suggestions for lenses, etc. to use for outdoor photography would be good too.  This is the first camera I have had that is not just a point and shoot.   Thanks!

note I'm not a photo expert, but I like a tripod over a monopod. arrmike New

note I've used this.  It helps, but is no where near a substitute for tripod.Still too hard to shoot good pictrues with zoom <NT> geoffcj New
note I love my GorillaPod for my DSLR.   I also use an inxepnsive, light weight tripod.   All the value is in the head, but- geoffcj New
