You get a lot more versatility, like you can do time-lapse, or use the timer and get yourself in the shot.  And for really long shutter speeds, they are necessary (like 1 second exposures)

Monopods seem to be best for moving action.  Like sports or paddling- they provide some nice support, plus the ability to follow the action that isn't there with a tripod.

It's true that monopods are better for hiking- the good ones are basically a trekking pole with an attachment for your camera.  but the good tripods are nice and light and narrow also- just not as bomber for scrambling and putting weight on it.

Just my opinion.
