If she was an intermediate mountain biker I would agree with all you said, but she is a newbie who will occasionally hit a trail. Gotta match your suggestions to your buyer.
V-brakes will outstop a disk in all but wet conditions. Any of these brakes will stop a tire from rotating and make it slide but a rim brake will dissipate heat quicker and won't fade like ALL disk brakes will under hard long stopping. Its simple physics. twice the pad area and ten times the caliper/rim area. Brakes convert energy into heat and as the rim or caliper heats up, they fade. Only problems with rim brakes are that they don't work in the wet and they are harder to keep adjusted. Aside from that she should save the 200 bucks.
Full squishy is much better for a trail rider but she says she will only do an occasional trail. She shouldn't ante up for sull susser until she becomes a trail rider as they are NOT as efficient on the asphault. This girl is looking for 90%+ greenbelt and road.
Big tires are more fun on the dirt but not nearly as efficient on asphault. Gotta match your tire to your rider or conditions and she doesn't need full knobbied 2.4's. Semi slick, fast as hell tires well give enough on dirt and way more on the road/compacted gravel.
She wants to ride mostly road, don't try to make a free-rider outta her....... Yet. <insert evil grin here>
