I spent a few minutes in my office trying not too look too silly, and I did these measurements on my own, so they could be off.  CAT - I don't know if I'm short by bike standards - you'll have to tell me.

Of course now I don't know what to do but try bikes.  Our urban trails (not far from my house) offer all levels and I see my destination being the trail, but want to get exercise (and not drive) on the way.  I like the suspension idea because it's more comfortable and can be locked for road riding but I have a friend who just spent $1k fixing a shock or fork or something but he's a badass mountain biker.  This makes me a bit leery of used MTBs.  I don't plan to spend more than $500 (I was really looking to spend way less) on this first bike and hope to buy one that I can sell without a huge loss when/IF I upgrade.  I will definitely try the gel woman's seat.  I figure if I'm not in extreme pain I'll be more likely to adopt biking quicker and stick with it.

When I bought my first kayak I agonized about it quite a bit, being an analyst at heart.  In the end I found a good deal on a Dagger GT, then upgraded later.

CAT - I was confused by:

Gage the staff at the shops - if any of them try to sell a beginner level rider looking for traveling on what the OP posted, I'd leave and find another shop. They're trying to 'up' you.

So I shouldn't let them try to sell me a beginner bike on what I posted?

Everyone's advice has been great, expert or not - it's as valuable if not moreso because those folks are more like me.  This is why I love BT.
