The best bit of bike-selecting advice I've ever received was this: don't buy a cheap bike, buy one that inspires you.  The one that inspires you will pull you into the saddle, will keep you riding, while the one that doesn't will darken your garage and sit unused.  A cheap bike is less cost-effective than the bike you fall in love with.
