As I've said all day long, about the anti-federalists and teh federalists, the country had been moving towards a fractured, divisive society for quite some time. There were cultural and economic differences that served to widen that rift. Battles among north, south, and even the western territories grew more heated, especially after 1850. Politicians and the somewhat new government sent conflicting signals trying to appease each of the many many groups involved, yet all of them remained dissatisfied.

I pointed to georgia in a few of my posts, because their seccession papers touched base on teh reasons they secceeded, and because I'm from there, anyway georgians saw a federal government controlled by northern industrialists who were unresponsive to the problems they faced. Tariffs paid by Georgians bought improvements in northern and western states, but not in southern states, and when it came to slaves, they and other southern countries looked at it as the federal government, they thought, was going to take away personal property ie.slaves and do so without compensation, a clear violation of their Fourth Amendment rights.

The whole thing about teh civial war being caused by slavery is asinine, and yeah, the south was wrong to think that Lincoln wanted or intended to free their slaves, hell, Lincoln never even went as far as to abolish illinios rules that kept blacks from testifying against whites, and even ordered the use of slavery in the re-construction of the US Capitol building, plus Lincoln himself said that the war wasn't about freeing the slaves and made it clear that the war was all about preserving the union and nothing else

Anyway, the turmoil pretty much came to a head when Lincoln was elected, which that in itself started the seccession talks in Georgia, noit because of slavery, but because of the widespread poltical and economical abuses that were taking place.

Think of it as GWB not only getting elected, but re-elected, which that in itself had people in an uproar and to this day has divided the country, but it's not as simple as that because of the crazy political jocking and political power struggle, and guess what, we're still arguing over the Constitution today, and our government advocates migrant labor, yanno illegals, it's just that americans have so much thing sto worry about in these modern times, that taking it to the streets will never happen, but sometime in teh future, I'm pretty sure that we'll be fighting each other again, maybe not north vs south, but rest assured that it too, will be over politics and oppression.
