Heres how I look at the learning stage.
If you running class2+ and you never swim then move it up to 3+ stuff.
Continue on up with only what your comfortable with..The river will let you know if you should be there or not.
It's no fun to be on a river that keeps your nerves shot and swimming a lot.
At least thats how I've done it....woohoo,after 9 yrs I've finally reached class  3/4. I have no desire to move much higher because I'm getting older and they give me enough excitement.
