Hero, villain, admirable, stupid, yada, yada.  Guys like him are a dime a dozen and the only reason he's of note is that author took notice of a possible story.  The balance between safety and stagnation, adventure and foolhardiness is one we all face. Most of us walk the middle ground, getting our thrills where we can without completely sacrificing  security.  A standard deviation from the mean.  That way we can point to those that take fewer risks than us and call them soul dead, then turn around and point to those taking more risks than us and call them foolish and irresponsible.  That's our right, we're the majority and culturally the majority makes the unwritten rules.  Any story like this is just a barometer of where we each see ourselves on the risk taking, sacrifice, cost to gain scale and more often than not we use it to justify our own position at the cost of reducing the individual to a characature.
