Walking down a couple of streets, getting attacked from rooftops and basements, attacking each house from the bottom up, walking into a trap each time, getting shot at when they reached the next floor, only to realize that they had captured an empty house, because the insurgents had left through the sewers or over planks laid from rooftop to rooftop. They the U.S. troops assaulted the next house from which they were taking fire, with the same scenario happening all over again. The amount of troops used to attack ans clear a house was far greater than a single fireteam, and they went for the straight forward style of attacking whatever poured fire at them. The marines assaulted simultaneously in parallel streets, which the insurgents used to move in between, and then fire at both units, before disappearing again. That way they started friendly firing incidents many times.
So sorry Rick, in theory you're right, in practice they didn't work. I've witnessed Force Recon troops deal with war game scenerio's in a mock up training village, with American-Iraqi people playing the civilians and insurgents. They got hammered every time exactly because of the lack of small scale light infantry tactics. Always relying on helicopters, armoured HUMMV's or even tanks to help them out with superior firepower, instead of using small scale tactics.
