So it's absolutely irrelevant for the discussion about whether using the small unit tactics now available to modern western troops are going to work against unconventional troops using more advanced small unit tactics.

Firebombing a whole city filled with civilians is nothing less than a mass murder, and then we haven't even talked about the effect that has on the resolve of the opponent to really make the occupier pay for that. But only very stupid people still believe that it's a good thing to indiscriminantly bomb other people into the stone age, regardless of them being civilian or combatant. It sure would be playing right into the cards of the insurgency, not to mention be morally wrong. But surely Rick wouldn't be so dense as to propose that as an option during an anti-insurgency battle in a city filled with civilians. Something like that sounds remarkably like Macarthur who was considering using nuclear weapons in North Korea and China...
