... you will be on highway 64 heading for Murphy and the Nantahala.  Just before you get to Murphy hang a right on highway 129 south at Decker's Fleamarket (yeah no shit).  Stay on 129 thru Blairsville and then over the Blue Ridge and down into Cleveland.  Go 3/4 of the way around the courthouse and head east on highway 115.   About 6 miles out, take a right on highway 384 (Duncan Bridge Road) and travel about another 3 miles to the river.  Wildwood will be on your left just before the bridge ... look for the ratty gravel driveway and an old dead kayak hanging in a tree.

This route approved by Google maps.  right at 100 miles, 2 hr 18 min.  Keep in  mind that at that distance you will be driving near a number of other nifty rivers (Nantahala and Toccoa for instance) so only plan to do this if it looks like it's gonna go and you are psyched to do it at least once before you die.  Guess it would be fine if you are planning to proceed thence back to Birmingham.
