Obama and McCain from outside of the American campaign arena.
Neither are substantially different on foreign policy. Obama wants a 15 month time table in Iraq, which is increasingly becoming irrelavent as the Iraqis take over more and more of their own security, and wants to be confrontational in Afganistan with Pakistan (I happen to agree with him on that point). Biden was one of the architects of the Bosnian and Kosovo "interventions" and is pushing for intervention in Darfur and is strongly Pro Isreal. McCain doesn't want a time table in Iraq, again a point that is fast becoming irrelavent and want's to be confrontational with the Iranians. Palin is also seems to be a big Pro Isreal person. The only real difference is what country they want to send troops to fight. Both seem to support expanding NATO.
Of the brighter side, the recent terrorist bombing in Pakistan and pressure from the US and UN have lead to a new offensive in the FATA by the Pakistan Army. It's amazing what a few well place missiles can do to bring a response. The real bright note is that a number of the Tribal militias seem to be real sick of the Taliban and are siding with the Federal Troops. As normal in this area, I suspect that much of this support will hinge on just how successful the Pakistan Army actually is against the Taliban. I kind of a agree with the British guy, Afganistan is unwinnable unless Pakistan can control the FATA. |
