experience indicates that carrying a gun would be useful.  Obviously we can't carry everything that might be "useful," and so we have to base our decisions first on our own experience, and then on the experiences of others.  I believe my personal decision about firearms has been justified by my own 65 years of life experience, and the life experience of those close to me. 

As for seatbelts, I have been in three accidents where seatbelts reduced or prevented my injury.  And again, I can't think of any situation in my life where having a handgun or shotgun would have saved me from harm.

I honestly think y'all have been watching too much television.
