You can make up all the arguments you want, but it is quite clear that nearly everyone in the US goes through life without using, or even needing, a gun for personal protection. The biggest spur to sale of handguns by relatively law abiding citizens is television, not a rational assessment of personal risk.
Now, if you see an upsurge of home invasions in your neigborhood, then maybe a gun is worth something. Maybe. But better doors and some family rehearsal of precautions, hell, even a good security system, is going to get you more safety. Nice to think of that pistol being handy while the kids are watching TV. |
