I think you have to consider on a material by material basis - somethings it makes more sense to recycle financially. And finances aren't the only angle - space in landfills, plastics accumulating in the waterways and oceans, the "PITA" factor, etc. Aluminum takes a lot of electricity to extract from bauxite, it's easy for me to recycle - I recycle aluminum. Glass is made from an abundant material, breaks into sharp pieces and is heavy - I don't recycle that as religiously. Plastic is made from hyrdocarbons, squeezes down to a compact shape, and is light - I recycle that. Paper/cardboard are made from trees; I like trees - etc... Steel we don't use so much of in our house, cans tend to require a bit of washing for us to keep them around - this we don't recycle unless it's a large item.
I've also heard that one factor in the profitability of a recycling program is who sorts the material - I'd like to know if those municipalities that have stopped accepting recyclables were accepting them unsorted.
