I take a sample of their sound (something real and continuous) every 1/44,000 of a second. Those samples are what are recorded onto the CD. If you use a Fast Fourier transform with enough points, you can reconstruct the entire frequency spectrum of the original sound, up to about 22,000 Hz (just above the upper range of human hearing at 20,000 Hz).
