Hi, I've checked into the paddle for your life organization, currently in washington. i emailed a guy on that website. the personwho began this forum made a pretty poor attempt at looking into this, but did vigorously advocate for a forum. hence, we have a forum, but no one's actually doing anything. i suspect this person is just an email jockey, and i suggest that you direct questions directly to the guys at paddle for your life.
Having said all that, I checked into forming a group. You need: 1. liability insurance, which can be procured through ACA pretty cheaply (although they're redoing their insurance at present so i can't vouch for that officially), by either forming or being a part of a nonprofit. if you can, be a program within an existing nonprofit. it's easier.
this doesn't cost much, few dollars really, but is absolutely necessary.
2. devoted guides, geear, etc. these shouldn't be too hard to find, if you've got some civic-minded paddling buddies. and god knows we've all got extra gear.
3. water, two kinds: flat, moving
I decided not to form my own paddle for your life chapter because in looking into this i found that LA parks and recreation actually has a program. if you live in the LA area you can volunteer with the person teaching it (contact me i don't have permission to give out her name). It costs nothing to the kids, and LA parks has paid for equipment, etc. they could always use more donated or borrowed gear i am sure.
hope this helps, cheers jess |
