question how do you rig your chicken/perimeter line? New

Sounds simple, but does anyone have good tricks for what type of rope/webbing to use, how to get it really tight, etc?

I just put one on a raft last night with 5/8" black polypro I got at Home Depot which has something like 5000# break strength, and I used one continuous piece, with a twist through each D-ring and then I tied a loop in one end (fig 8 on a bight), and then pulled the other end back through the figure 8 and tied it off with 2 half hitches.  I did all this with the raft blown, but not blown real firm, figuring the rope will stretch a small amount when it's firm.

I'll learn new knots/tricks/etc. One of my worries is that by the time the rope stretches, the knots will be so bedded in that I won't be able to loosen them and get the whole line tighter.  If there are ways to make this work better, I'd love to know.  Maybe I've got it dialed, maybe not.
