I agree that webbing is probaly best, but I had a bunch of old climbing rope around so that is what I used.  I used one rope around the whole boat and did a clove hitch at each d-ring.  It stretched really bad once it got wet, so I spent the time floating the Doldrums (Ocoee) tightening it up.  With the clove hitches, I was able to pull each section tight, working the slack through the clove hitch.  I was able to move from d-ring to d-ring without putting slack back in the tightened line.
