I first kayaked the Kennebec in 1980 or 81. My first wife and I took vacation up there. We stayed in a B&B for the first weekend and then on Monday we moved up to the Forks, ME for the rest of the 10 days.
We almost didn't come back. :) We ended up at Crab Apple (Tree?) Inn. They were just getting started. Northern Outdoor's Inn was brand new and they had the largest satellite dish I had ever seen. :)
The story that could be told of N.O., if you knew it all, would be quite a novel. What's his name? The owner? He was a wild man. Gruff, more energy than a PCP overdose, a true life of the partier. :) He was also the inventor of the Banjo Minnow!!!
N.O. is marketed like no other place. If you're on any mailing list you got their 2007 flier last week. Party time! :)
I was up there in 2003 with Wife #2 and it was the same or all different, depending on your point of view. What's his name is no longer there. His wife #1 is running things. And N.O. is still party time and about 75 other things. Winter snowmobiling is real big too.
Anyway, the Kennebec is still a rocking river. (My Avatar is from the Kennebec.) Katadin is still a long way around on dirt roads and still a tough hike. Crab Apple is HUGE and makes me regret I didn't throw in there like I probably could have. :)
