Whenever i flip I always try and get back to the raft as quickly as possible. Whenever it looks like I am going to flip, I hold on as tightly as possible and hope for the best. More often than not, I end up in the water still holding on and do my best to climb on top. Depending on the situation and the rapid I either reflip and pick everyone up or ride it out upside down. The biggest thing to remember is that as the guide of the raft, you must do your best to rescue everyone else. You need to do your best, depending on what is downstream and river flows of course, of getting back on the raft and rescuing everyone else.
But to best figure out what to do when a raft flips, you need to go flip your boat a bunch. The fear of flipping and swimming goes away when you become comfortable in the water and know that you have the ability to handle the situation. Go look for wavetrains that end in large pools, pile everyone in the back and flip that f'er. Then you can have fun and experience the feeling of being thrown into the water. Personally, whenever I go rafting for fun you'll find my raft upside down in most rapids if it safe enough. |
