My suggestion is practice in flat water several times, try mounting the upside down boat from the sides, good to practice because you cannot always move to the bow or stern, where its easier! Once you get the hang on flat water, move to flipping in a wave train and do the same. Then move to letting the boat fall on yourself, practice getting out from under.
It sucks having your very first flip on a commercial trip and you are clueless and inexperienced.

When you flip with clients,
1. Try and get onto the boat, even if it means losing your paddle. (I always have dropped my paddle during a flip, but always have spares)
2. Once ontop of the boat DO A HEADCOUNT of your clients. If anyone is missing 99% of the time they are under the boat! Remember, do your headcount BEFORE you re-flip the boat.
3. Flip the boat back yourself (if its a paddle boat)
4. Start picking up the clients nearby.

Keep in mind you have to get the punters to let go of the side of the boat as you filp it back.

Regarding fliplines.

I have personally always found its best to carry one on person, around the waist. I would suggest you a 1-2" webbing. Webbing is heck on a lot easier to pull on than a piece of rope~!

In small volume rivers on small boats I would NOT advise any sort of chicken flip line crap. Its extremly dangerous and you can get it snagged on all sorts of stuff.

On large volume rivers especially on big boats (30,000+ cfs 16' boats) I use a strap on each side. Strapped to the underside of the floor through the holes or loops. Use a 2' or 3' strap and let the loose end just hang. Use this over a side to side set-up. Its safer!
Keep in mind I would not advise this on small volume rivers!

When you flip remember the MOST important thing... BREATHE...!

Good luck
