Some of the info in earlier post is wrong. i am not stepping on your toes but stan boor at alaska outfitters will provide you gear in haines. it is top notch gear that is very user friendly. kate and stan are sobek guides who have ran rivers all over the world. take my advice and call him and he will answer any quetion you might have. as for the expenses it will 50 per cent of what a commercial trip is or less. i did a 14 day tat trip in 2000 for 950 dollars a person that included food rental gear and shuttle( air and land ). last i checked a helicopter from whitehorse is $900 per hour and taking 3 hours to do a 16 person trip around turnback. i have a permit coming up in 2009 and im doing the alsek.

you should have a sattelite phone, epirb (emergency personal indicator radio beacon ), 2 days extra food, and make your return home flight at least 2 days after you get off the river. getting socked in (fog) in dry bay is very common. the extra food can come in handy there. if you dont need it you can trade it for a few beers with the fishermen.

call stan and you will see you can just show up with your personal gear and have a hassle free trip. you will have to make your shuttle flight arrangements but he can hook you up with the best ones. he will know who is most dependable. cheaper is not always the best here. dependable is.
