if the dog freaks out there stands a high chance of it crawling up on the kid and scratching the hell out of the kid.  If the kid freaks out, there is no amount of ice cream that'll convince her to get back into the boat.  Just food for thought

that being said..I vote to leave the dog at home, put the kid in an inflatable kayak and take it to a lake, work in paddling.  a nine year old can paddle.  And if you and your buddy are willing to bump a raft down the river, bumping an inflatable kayak may be easier because it's more responsive to your nudges.

I still think it's a foolish idea, but I don't wear your pants
