I do appreciate the feedback, but I hope that Tom did not misunderstand my question as a statement, I have no perspective here and I'm trying to gain one. As a five time veteran of the Grand Canyon, all private trips with another launch scheduled for next August, I'm concerned about what the future holds for my continued participation.
Already I've seen my access to the river cut to one launch per calendar year, which is disappointing because I was looking forward to helping out on more trips once I retire in two years. On one trip I was on, one of the participants was only off the river 3 weeks before our launch and was scheduled to launch again just 5 weeks after we took off. I'm not sure I wanted to go that frequently, but having an experienced veteran on a GC trip can't be a disadvantage, can it?
I am a little concerned about being relegated to winter boating on the canyon. After all, historically the river has been known to freeze solid enough at Lee's Ferry to allow wagons and stock to cross. What if I show up for a January launch and the river is impassible due to ice? I'm not put off by the prospect of rowing in the cold, I'm from Missouri where our local boating season is from November to May, and I've done day trips where I've had to portage by kayak around frozen flatwater. That, I'm willing to do. I'm not willing to portage a ton of Riken, frame and gear around ice bridges on the GC. |
