10AM-1PM: There were two to three aggregates of surfers associated with the take-off zones and distinct rips between each zone. A lone kayaker was surfing the southernmost zone. My favorite take-off zone by far is "the corner" nearest the jetty when it's on and it was on today. Kayakers don't seem to venture into this area very often (if ever?). I know there's some mild historical animosity towards kayakers at Westport, but it's your responsibility to teach the local surfers that the days of torpedoes and deadheads recklessly bee-lining for the shore are over. I'm sure you'd be accepted if you smile alot, wait your turn, and can successfully make the drop and bottom turn. The take-off is pretty steep and critical, but the pay-off is so thick, fat, long, slo-mo, and worth it. {insert 1970's porn footage here}
The wind was blowing 5-10 knots offshore til about noon and then switched to 10+ onshore, wave height was hip high to a bit overhead, long wait between sets, quite clean and alot of fun (of course!). The current NOAA forecast looks spectacular, but if you scavenge for more details, you'll find a secondary swell with a different angle, a period of 4-8 sec, and enough energy associated with it to qualify as a 'shared primary swell'. This was sort of evident today given the long wait between quality sets of the 15-second variety.
In a nutshell: If you can't get out of your busy schedule this week, then it's not that great. If you have some free time or sick leave, it's friggin' awesome!
