Beach clean ups and banning cars from beaches etc... Imho are mostly feel good legislation. In fact, almost selfish to some degree because it really does nothing to address the real issues and simply helps visually vanquish pollution that we can see which is not the real killer pollution...
The real killers to the environment are imho :
Beach restorations which cover beaches and reefs and the microorganisms in the food chain which in turn kills off what they are eaten by. Why do we do this? To preserve public and private property rights. Solution?
Human run off. This includes all forms of chemicals to the fertilizers that make your lawn pretty to pesticides that keep your landscape nice and the roaches out. Yes, even our natural bug killers are poisonous, they kill bugs right? Who eats the bugs? Think food chain; take ones food away it affects the chain all the way up eventually. Solution?
Our medications from aspirins to ant-depressants, and even birth control pill chemicals altering trout spawning. It is a fact that traces of all the pharmaceuticals we produce are being found in our rivers and oceans in micro amounts, no big deal? Minor amounts you say? Think food chain and it becomes clear how these things are affecting us, albeit these may be small amounts to larger species, think of the impact on the micro-creatures of the earth on which the food chain depends. Solution?
Anyways, that’s my thoughts on the issues… My solutions are not so simple though, however I do say, think small first… heh
