A traveller was walking along a beach when he saw a woman scooping up starfish off the sand and tossing them into the waves. Curious, he asked her what she was doing. The woman replied "When the tide goes out it leaves these starfish stranded on the beach. They will dry up and die before the tide comes back in, so I am throwing them back into the sea where they can live."

The traveller then asked her "But this beach is miles long and there are hundreds of stranded starfish, many will die before you reach them - do you really think throwing back a few starfish is really going to make a difference?"

The woman picked up a starfish and looked at it, then she threw it into the waves. "It makes a difference to this one" she said.

Anyhow, I'm with Erick and (I guess) Russ by saying that if there was any chance of me destroying a loggerhead or shorebird nest by driving off the concrete we have strewn our civilization with, then it wouldn't be worth the risk. Much less so if I was doing so to pursue my own pleasure.

I have to say its pretty depressing to hear these types of opinions from those who are so connected with the ocean and mother nature by their passion (particularly from someone who claims some sort of leadership role in out sport, Brian), and it makes me think we are probably doomed. While I agree there are probably other more impactful approaches to safeguarding the ocean environment, I don't see why they can't also be pursued by the enlightened; be mindful of the detergents you use (Ecover is a bit more expensive and requires more effort but reduces that impact immensely), garden organically, recycle and reduce consumption etc. etc.

The type of bullshit attitude I just witnessed ("we shouldn't bother, it's not going to help any") is why we're in this mess. If we - as educated and connected individuals - don't do everything we can to safeguard the environment for future generations and act like role models (influencing the less aware), then our descendants are fucked and we don't deserve the freedoms we enjoy to ride the pulses of energy provided for us by our mother nature.
