I had gone to Costa Rica several times in the early 90's to surf the western coast. I was taken by a sense of safety and security when touring the country...even in remote areas not frequented by touristas. The land was clean and orderly....the people friendly and accepting of foreign visitors. It was easy to become very trusting...even in settings that would normally put you on guard.
At the end of my third trip down there, we motored back to San Jose for a stay in a downtown hotel before departing for home early the next morning. Three car loads of us pulled up to the main entrance to the hotel and left our vehicles while we went in to register. In the few minutes we left our cars unattended, thieves virtually emptied them of all our personal possessions. And I mean everything...including our boards!
It short...it was a shocking reality check. Even in a country noted for its civil behavior...shit happens! |
