These are some of the reasons I heard.  We had a great crew of local boaters on hand - Steve Melnick, Chris Goody, Steve Reska, Conner Finney,  Evan Ross, Travis Winn, Kristy Marin, Milo, etc - but only some of them felt ready to race with the high water and many heard about it too late to get very psyched up for it.

With Toepper out with knee surgery the CB crew just didn't get the word till there were Southeastern paddling rigs all over town.   Bummer for the flavor of the event for sure.   It was also some of the highest water of the season - making those '5 0'clock ' runs fully stomping for the after-work crowd most of whom have just put the skis up and dusted off the paddles.   Kinda cool being worried about the holes along the course . . but the penalty of swimming multiple rapids and then searching for your broken boat in the Slate was a very real factor.

Perhaps next year there could be a 'Colorado Class' for some of these events, or any suggestions on how to encourage this region's best to step up would be appreciated.   Sure us Southeastern'ers paddle all winter and some even train for these things.  But all of us like to see and paddle with our CO friends while in town and we really miss the local turnout that used to be a standard of the Colorado tour.

I can't beat Holcombe either, but it sure was fun trying and just bucking up to do my best ...

There is nothing like making tough moves quickly one after the other, and these 'extreme races' give us   a motivational urgency without having to drop into the risks of North Slate.  Good stuff.
