Right now I time-shift my commute to avoid peak traffic, otherwise a 45-minute trip takes about 2 hours. This gets me to work around 11, which starts me out 'behind'. This also gets me home late at night- 8:pm is pretty early for me, and generally my son is in bed at that time, so I only really get to see him in the morning. We live where we live because it's close to my wife's business and gets her (and therefore, my son) off the interstate. That said, it sucks for me because I don't see my family much during the week, and .
A bike would get me into the HOV lane, meaning I could commute at pretty much any time I wanted... which would be good for me in a lot of ways- but then, I'd also be on a bike in traffic. I'm a conservative driver, but I also know from my bicycle commuting that cars and bikes sharing the same space == biker loses. I don't ride my bicycle in the city any more because I've been over a couple absent-minded peoples' hoods already, and I have to consider that I'm a dad now.
I'd more than double my mpg, cutting my fuel costs by more than half if I rode all the time. Turns out insurance for me for 12 months would be ~$225 or so (less than half my current monthly fuel costs) if I get the bike I'm looking at. I can probably pick up one of these used for $5k (+ ~$600 for helmet and armor). There's very little reason for me to commute in my truck (which gets me about 20mpg), but I want to wait on buying a more efficient car for the next generation to come out. (I lust for one of these or one of these, but neither is available yet)
Has anybody else gone this route? Got any suggestions or advice?
