Personal info: I've been kayaking since 2001 when I started on the Little 'Marmy, or the Little Miami as the map calls it, in Cincinnati, Ohio. After a few short days on flat water and pool sessions. I was amped. The first real white water I ever did was the Cumberland River Bellow the Falls in Ky, an intro classic for carpet-baggin, uppity-uppity city boaters from the North. We headed down the river at about 5:00 pm on a Saturday evening in August 2001. I had little to no idea of what I was doing. I could roll and make ferries in moving water, but that was about it. Little did I know that paddling a 6 mile whitewater run and a 8 mile lake paddle was not feasibly possible before nightfall. We were off the whitewater section b/4 dark, but were on the lake til about 11:00pm or 12:00 am. That was the night my core group of paddlers that I would grow and learn with over the next several years was born, the Eco Idiots. We took the name Eco Idiots, comparing ourselves to the people who did the Eco Challenge, however we lacked any real skill or plan of acttion. We just did things that didn't really make sense, such as starting 14 mile runs with 2 hours of light and running unfamiliar rapids in the dark. Well we survived anyway. The original group include myself, my brother Eric, our good friend Claudia Archer and my friend and mentor Don Brannon. Over time our influence spread throughout the small community of Cincinnati boaters. The group spread to include Big Mike, Aaron, my Dad, Kieth Daegele, and many more. Along the way we were even able to endoctrinate my now fiance Bree. anyway its getting late. sorry if you read this before i finish and proof-read. j
